Kozhikode: The results of the Kerala local body elections 2025 have left both Kollam and Kozhikode Corporations without a clear majority for either the CPM-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) or the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), placing the focus firmly on post-poll negotiations in two politically crucial cities. The picture that emerged from the Kerala local body election results announced on Saturday showed the UDF moving towards a decisive victory in the local polls. The outcome delivered a setback to the LDF and pointed to a possible shift in voter mood ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. In the 56-member Kollam Corporation, the party-wise strength is as follows: LDF-16; UDF-27; NDA-12; and Others-1. A minimum of 29 members is needed to form a ruling majority. While the UDF emerged as the single largest bloc, it fell short by two seats. The situation is similar in Kozhikode, where a majority of 39 members is required to govern the 76-member corporation. The composition here is UDF-26, LDF-34, NDA-13, and Others-3. The LDF, despite being the largest group, remains five seats away from securing control on its own. The local body verdict suggests that both the LDF and the UDF will have to explore compromises or support arrangements if they aim to take charge of governance in Kollam and Kozhikode.Across the corporations, the UDF has emerged with a clear advantage, securing leads in four of the six civic bodies. The front is poised to take over the Kollam, Thrissur and Kochi corporations from the LDF while holding on to Kannur. The LDF is ahead in one corporation, with the NDA also leading in one.
